The Rabbit Returns to Evergreen
You may not know that in 1953, the Contest Administrator used a standing rabbit to let the MC know that the judges were ready for the next contestant. Sometime later a light system was developed and is used today.
This weekend, the Puyallup Valley Harmonizers revived the custom at the first annual Harmony In The Valley Barbershop Contest held at the Puyallup Spring Fair. Nine quartets competed, along with three choruses and three VLQs.
The contest was judged by a panel of local people. Peggy Burrough is a retired choral teacher who is still active as a judge and coach. Beth Smith is a Certified Sound Sweet Adeline judge. Derek Tilton is a Music Performance student at Pacific Lutheran University. Steven Zopfi is the choral director of the Portland Symphonic Choir and teaches at the University of Puget Sound.
The winners received small medallions as mementos, and checks. More than $2000 in cash was distributed to the top competitors. The Puyallup Spring Fair gladly sponsored this project along with a number of local businesses.
Top prizes went to Livewire (SAI), the Abbotsford Voices of Harmony VLQ (BHS) and the Federal Way Jet Cities chorus (SAI). Other cash winners were Sincerely Yours (BHS), Champagne (SAI), Snohomish Voices Northwest (SAI) and Federal Way Harmony Kings (BHS).
The Show of Champions brought the afternoon in the open air to a delightful close, featuring all the winners and the Puyallup Valley Harmonizers.
